Updating our dining nook

When we first moved into our home, the dining nook was one of the areas we were most excited to furnish and decorate. At the time, we were so proud of this space – but after more than five years of looking at the same table on the same rug with the same chairs, we were definitely ready for an update. And, it’s fair to say, our tastes have changed!

Our style evolution

Having now lived in our home for a few years, we definitely have a clearer idea of our own personal style and a better understanding of how to bring that to life. Although I still adore that aztec print rug (which was fortunately rehomed to a lovely Facebook Marketplace buyer who happened to be looking for the same exact rug!) and we are keeping the same chairs, both these elements paired with the table now seem somewhat confused.

It makes sense, as at the time, we certainly didn’t give it too much thought. We simply bought pieces we liked and hoped for the best! As for the white venetian blinds, they served us well when we were broker-than-broke first homebuyers. But, we are certainly happy to see the last of them!

Downsizing our dining table

While we desperately wanted to believe that we had enough space to fit a six seater table, we were constantly cleaning scuff marks off walls. And, trying to squeeze between the end chairs to get around to the other side got really old, really fast.

We agreed that next time around we would need to downsize our dining table. Although it would mean we wouldn’t be able to seat more than four people at the table, we don’t tend to have a lot of guests in the cooler months. And, when it’s warmer, we have plenty of space on our large, outdoor dining table.

When we first moved the new table into place, I quite literally squealed with delight. Such an improvement! Not only does the smaller, round table make the space feel bigger, but it’s so much more functional and just feels more comfortable to sit at. No regrets here!

Linen curtains and sheers

Last year, we updated the curtains in our primary bedroom to beautiful linen curtains and sheers from LinenMe. We instantly fell in love with how they transformed the space, and have been slowly adding them throughout the rest of our home, too.

As part of our dining nook makeover, we (finally) pulled the last two sets out of the boxes they were shipped in and hung them up to replace the old venetian blinds. I’ve said this before, but sheers truly make such a difference. Since we have made the switch, our entire living and dining area feels so much lighter and airier.

Choosing the right rug

Having already made our decision on the chairs, table and curtains, we needed a rug that would complement the other elements and tie the space together. As soon as we came across the Jaira Blue Rug from Iconic Rugs, we knew we had found the one.

A subtle grey-blue, the rug adds some colour to an otherwise neutral space, and the pared-back floral motifs add a point of interest without overpowering. It truly is a beautiful piece, and I think it adds a touch of timeless elegance.

Fortunately, the Jaira Rug is available in multiple sizes (and colours if blue isn’t for you). This meant we were able to order it in the perfect size for our dining nook. A 6mm pile rug, it’s also going to be super easy to keep clean – particularly important given its placement!
